In January, the Health Inequalities team supported a smoking cessation event at Hope House Surgery in Radstock. The event was aimed at helping patients quit smoking. The event saw overwhelming interest, with all spots filled, reflecting the community's strong desire to address health concerns related to smoking.
Fifteen participants attended, who had assistance from healthcare professionals specialising in smoking cessation. Among the various support strategies, many left with free vape starter kits, part of an initiative encouraging individuals to #swaptostop. This innovative tactic allows smokers to shift from traditional cigarettes to vaping, which is generally viewed as a less harmful option. Recent studies suggest that switching to vaping can lower exposure to harmful chemicals, making it a valuable alternative for those looking to quit.
The Importance of Smoking Cessation
Smoking is one of the leading causes of preventable deaths globally, contributing to chronic illnesses such as heart disease, various cancers, and serious lung conditions. Quitting smoking can cut the risk of these diseases significantly. For instance, people who stop smoking can reduce their risk of heart disease considerably within a year of quitting. Recognising these facts, the Health Inequalities team is dedicated to providing accessible support for those wanting to quit.
By creating a welcoming environment, they help foster a spirit of community and motivation for individuals making the effort to quit. Events like the one at Hope House Surgery are essential for improving public health outcomes.
Event Highlights
The event was not just successful in attendance; it also featured a wide range of resources tailored to participants' needs. Attendees received personalized advice from healthcare professionals, who guided them through the many smoking cessation options available.

The team's initiative included welcoming drop-in patients who might not have registered in advance, ensuring anyone interested could access valuable support.
Community Impact and Future Events
Positive feedback from participants highlighted the collaborative efforts between the health care teams and the community.
Planning future events centered on smoking cessation and other health inequalities is crucial. The Health Inequalities team aims to expand these initiatives, increasing awareness about health disparities in the community. Through active outreach, they hope to ensure even more individuals can access the resources they need.
